Anthony's wealthy family wanted him to be a great nobleman, but for the sake of Christ he became a poor Franciscan Priest.

When the remains of Saint Berard and his companions, the first Franciscan martyrs, were brought to be buried in his church, Anthony was moved to leave his order, enter the Friars Minor, and go to Morocco to evangelize. Shipwrecked at Sicily, he joined some other brothers who were going to Portiuncula. He lived in a cave at San Paolo leaving only to attend Mass and sweep the nearby monastery. One day when a scheduled speaker failed to appear, the brothers pressed him into speaking. He impressed them so much that he was thereafter constantly travelling, evangelizing, preaching, and teaching theology through Italy and France .

A gifted speaker, Anthony attracted crowds everywhere he went, speaking in multiple tongues; legend says that even the fish loved to listen. One of the most beloved of saints, Anthony's images and statues are found everywhere. He was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church on 16 January 1946.

St Anthony’s has been part of the Franciscan Schools Australia network of schools from across Australia since 2006. The FSA network aims to bring together school communities linked by the Franciscan spiritual tradition begun by St Francis of Assisi 800 years ago. Its purpose is to assist in the sharing of resources, both human and material, in order to enrich Franciscan Spirituality within the schools.

Franciscan Spirituality sends a clear message of the responsibility and great care we need to demonstrate for our environment especially in our current world context. As Christians we are called, as a matter of urgency, to address this grim reality in the context of our living out our faith, and in the biblical call to be good and wise custodians of creation and of God’s Earth.

Pope John Paul II has reminded us that, “the environment crisis is not merely a technical one but a moral one”, calling for radical changes “in lifestyle and unsustainable patterns of consumption and production”.

As teachers and parents in our school community we are challenged to not only educate our children about the environment but also to demonstrate that we too are people of faith and action who share this responsibility for God’s Earth.

“We must remember that the future is not somewhere we are going it is something that each of us creates every day.”
